Ignite Somerset is delivered by Somerset Film and supported by Arts Council. It provides new opportunities for artists to explore the potential of digital technology as a means of creating and sharing art. Our team at the Bridgwater Engine Room also collaborate with artists to produce environments in which audiences can encounter art in new, engaging and unexpected ways.
The definition of an artist is any individual who chooses to develop and share ideas through creative means, for example: a poem, a film, a photograph or a song. This definition enables us to work with the whole creative community including: established and emerging artists, students of the arts, community groups, children and young people, older members of the community and those who have limited access to arts and culture. The next primary focus for Ignite is sound and music, the district focus is Mendip. This does not mean someone living outside Mendip (or someone who isn’t into sound and music) can’t apply, if you are creative – or want to unlcok your creativity! – we want to hear from you.
Ignite Somerset can offer different levels of support to artists, from creative collaborations such as the ‘poetry for film’ piece made with performance poet Thommie Gillow, to simple technical advice on the use of digital media equipment. The initiative also exploits digital media in order to provide platforms for artists to showcase their work and ideas, for example via the Ignite Somerset weekly radio programme.
Ignite is an integrated part of a programme of media and arts projects. The initiative also collaborates with other arts organisations across the county, adding value and a digital dimension to their projects, for example the Word/Play project coordinated by Somerset’s rural arts development agency Take Art.
IGNITE SOMERSET – dedicated to enabling arts makers and audiences in Somerset to harness the new opportunities afforded through digital technology to create and experience greater artistic excellence and innovation.
Nothing speaks louder than the artwork itself so, enough reading, take a look at: the Ignite Somerset picture gallery, recent and past posts, the primary artform pages and listen to recent radio broadcasts. Have a think about how you might explore the creative potential of digital technology and get in touch.
